Thomas Dawson land grants, 1795 / Geo. Mathews.

The Thomas Dawson land grants include forty-five grants issued by the State of Georgia in 1795 to Thomas Dawson. Each grant is for 1,000 acres of land in Montgomery County, Ga. and all are signed by George Mathews, Governor. These grants were probably for land involved in the "pine barren fraud," a scandal in which Georgia's public domain was recklessly given away under the administration of Governor Mathews. During 1793 alone, over 7,000,000 acres of land were granted in Montgomery County, a county which physically contained only a little over 400,000 acres. The original plats and pendant seals are attached.
